Toowoomba Regional Council’s Change Project has been recognised at the 2023 Community Achievement Awards.
Held in November, the Change Project was selected as a semi-finalist in the ‘Awards Australia Charitable Foundation Mental Health and Wellbeing Award’ category.
TRC Environment and Community Committee Portfolio Lead, Councillor Tim McMahon congratulated Council staff and all of the providers for putting on programs throughout the Region as part of the Change project.
“While we are well-known for our flowers and parks as the Garden City, we also have an unwanted tag as being an unhealthy Region and this is something we’ve been working hard to fix,” Cr McMahon said.
“We wanted to support our residents to be a more healthy and active community by offering a range of low-cost activities across the Region.
“In 2012 we established the Change Project to improve physical and mental wellbeing and to improve social inclusion.
“Since we began, the project has grown from 6000 attendances in 2012 to 66,961 in 2023 which is fantastic to see.
“Unlike many other local government organisations TRC only has one officer to coordinate the entire project.
“When you take this into account, it’s remarkable that we were able to hold 4225 regular sessions across the Toowoomba Region in the 2022-2023 financial year.”
