A Toowoomba teenager has taken out a national prize draw in the annual Big Summer Read competition, winning the 13–18 years category against entrants from across Australia.
The Big Summer Read is a nationwide initiative delivered by Australian public libraries each December and January, encouraging young people to keep their reading superpowers strong over the summer school holidays. To be eligible, participants must register and log at least five days of reading, with every additional book boosting their chances.
This year’s Toowoomba Region winner, Jazmin James, has claimed a Kobo Elipsa 2E eReader, valued at around $600.
Toowoomba Regional Council Library and Cultural Services portfolio spokesperson, Councillor Melissa Taylor said the result was a wonderful achievement for both Jazmin and the Toowoomba Region.
“We are incredibly happy to see a local young person win a national prize,” Cr Taylor said.
“The Big Summer Read is all about building a love of reading, and it’s fantastic to see our community embracing the program so enthusiastically. Jazmin’s achievement highlights the passion and creativity of young readers across our region.”
The Big Summer Read runs alongside a wide range of school holiday activities offered throughout Toowoomba Region Libraries, providing families with engaging, free programs that support learning and creativity.
