Toowoomba Regional Council’s Construction and Maintenance team has completed works on the West Creek Betterment Project in Toowoomba’s West Creek catchment as part of the broader 2022 Flood Recovery Program.
The completion marks the final milestone in a series of nine Betterment projects now delivered across the Toowoomba Region as part of the $11.8 million Betterment funding provided through the Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA) and jointly funded by the Australian and Queensland Governments.
State Member for Toowoomba North, Trevor Watts said Betterment was the centrepiece of ongoing efforts to build stronger, more resilient communities.
“Betterment is a shining example of how we’re delivering for Queensland, and I commend Toowoomba Council on reaching this milestone,” Mr Watts said.
“Since 2013 more than 920 Betterment projects across Queensland have been approved, with investment now exceeding $790 million.
“Betterment delivers clear, tangible results in communities, helping us better withstand the impacts of future disasters.
“Of Betterment projects re-impacted by a disaster event, we’ve seen avoided reconstruction costs of almost a billion dollars over a decade, which drives home the value of this work.”
Council Construction and Maintenance (Infrastructure Services) portfolio spokesperson, Cr Carol Taylor, said the works were focused on remediation and stabilisation of the creek banks along the West Creek corridor (pictured) between James Street and Herries Street in the Toowoomba CBD.
“The project is a step forward in protecting vital infrastructure,” Cr Taylor said.
“These improvements are designed to reinforce the channel’s resilience during significant rainfall events and reduce the risk of further erosion.
“The West Creek Betterment works involved remediation on both sides of the creek to reinstate scoured areas, and line sections of the channel to improve erosion resilience during heavy rainfall.
“Betterment funding has allowed us to act now to protect the West Creek channel from further erosion.
“It’s a great achievement to see the completion of all nine Betterment projects which have been delivered by our dedicated Construction and Maintenance teams.”
