Swan Hill hit by 1-in-50-year flash flood

Swan Hill Rural City Council is in clean-up mode today after the region suffered flash flooding overnight.

In a statement, Council CEO, Scott Barber said the “intense and significant downpour” had been classified as a 1-in-50-year rainfall event.

“[The rain] has overwhelmed our drainage systems and led to temporary inundation in certain areas,” said Mr Barber.

“We want to reassure residents that the Council drainage system and pumps did not malfunction during this challenging period, as some have reported.

“Our dedicated team has been working tirelessly to manage the situation and mitigate the impact of the flash flooding event.”

The Council CEO said community safety remained its top priority.

“We are grateful for your patience and understanding during these exceptional circumstances. We remind all residents to not drive though floodwater, this is not only a significant safety issue, it also creates additional pressure from the waves formed by vehicle movement, impacting on homes and properties.”
