Sustainable solutions on show at buy circular event for councils

Victorian local councils are set to come together on Wednesday, 11 June for a major showcase highlighting the use of circular and recycled products in public projects across the state.

Being held at Bunjil Place in Narre Warren, Sustainability Victoria’s Buy Circular Showcase will feature leading examples of circular procurement and material use in infrastructure, landscaping, and the built environment.

The event is open to all Victorian local council officers working in engineering, major projects, parks and gardens, landscaping, urban design, asset management, sustainability, procurement, waste, and the circular economy.

Sustainability Victoria’s CEO, Matt Genever said the showcase was a valuable opportunity for councils to share knowledge and see first-hand how circular economy principles are being applied in local government projects.

“We know from feedback from those councils that attended last year’s Buy Recycled Northern Showcase that the event was an eye-opener to the possibilities of sustainable procurement, and many have made changes as a result,” said Mr Genever.

“We’re excited that this year’s event has expanded from Buy Recycled to Buy Circular. By broadening the focus we’re building council’s capability in circular procurement.”

Highlights of the Day Include:

  • Presentations from council officers and industry experts who are leading the use of circular and recycled products across the built environment;
  • A trade hall featuring suppliers of circular and recycled products and materials.
  • Networking opportunities with colleagues from councils across Victoria over morning tea and lunch.
    Optional Site Tour:
    Attendees can also take part in an optional site tour, departing from Bunjil Place and returning by 5:15pm. A return bus will include a stop via Pakenham Station for added convenience.
    Tour stops include:
  • Casey Fields – South-East Melbourne’s premier sports and recreation precinct, with over 30 courts, fields, and tracks designed with circularity in mind, incorporating recycled materials throughout.
  • Orana Estate – The largest master planned community in Melbourne’s south eastern suburbs, where recycled materials are used in footpaths, pavements, and landscaping designed to improve soil health, promote urban cooling, and maximise tree canopy cover.
