Surf’s up for Northern Beaches club

Northern Beaches Council has announced the reopening of the newly refurbished Queenscliff Surf Life Saving Club.

Northern Beaches Mayor, Michael Regan said the refurbishment marked a new chapter in the history of the club.

“This is great news for the 1,300 club members and lifeguards who give up their time to keep our community safe,” Mayor Regan said.

“The upgraded club building will provide club members with the very best facilities now and into the future.

“It’s a fantastic new venue for the wider community to also enjoy, at the stunning location of Queenscliff Beach.

“This project is a great example of what can be achieved when local clubs and all levels of government work together.”

Council worked with the Queenscliff Surf Life Saving Club to secure grants from both the Federal and State Governments in addition to funds provided by Northern Beaches Council for the refurbishment.

Upgrades include:

  • a new level for a community hall, with new kitchen facilities
  • renewed club room and bar
  • new office and kitchenette
  • new lift and stairs
  • improved amenities
  • additional storage and club facilities
  • new windows, doors and roller shutters
  • energy efficiency improvements including solar hot water and new LED lighting
  • fire safety system
  • new flooring
  • fresh paint throughout the entire interior and exterior.

Queenscliff Surf Life Saving Club President, Garry Fox said the club was delighted with the upgraded facilities.

“The new club meets all the expectations of the vision developed 10 years ago in the club’s masterplan. I think the building is perfect for the future of our club as it continues to grow and fulfil our lifesaving duties,” he said.

“It’s wonderful to see a look of amazement when our members and the community first see the new building.

“The new facilities also provide the club with opportunities to hire the rooms which will provide additional funding to purchase lifesaving equipment and to pay for education programs.

“It’s now seen as a place, where people want to gather, share their stories and have fun. We welcome everyone to come and visit us and join in the Surf Life Saving movement,” Mr. Fox said.

President of Surf Life Saving NSW, George Shales said the club upgrades have made it a more welcoming place for the community, as well as the volunteer surf lifesavers.

“Queenscliff lifesavers will benefit enormously from these improvements which will also allow the club to reach out into the community and hopefully attract more members in the future,” he said.

“Surf Life Saving NSW is extremely grateful for the support of government at all levels to make this a reality.”

Council is also completing renewal projects at Long Reef and Mona Vale, with new surf clubs soon to be completed.
