Kiama’s Old Fire Station has been transformed by a series of vibrant new artworks created by Visual Arts Certificate III students from West Wollongong TAFE.
Inspired by the unique birdlife and habitats of the Illawarra, the artworks feature much-loved local species including the pelican, kookaburra, magpie and lyrebird.
The talented students involved in the project were Corinne Tillett, Robyn Reeve, Natasha Alphenaar, Dakota Storm, Sophie Ludwig, Mark Tsarev, Rory Cusack and Robert Bennett.
Kiama Municipal Council Mayor, Cameron McDonald (pictured) said the artwork nicely complemented the Kiama Sculpture Walk which is currently on display nearby at Hindmarsh Park and the harbour foreshore.
“This is a colourful addition to our town centre,” Mayor McDonald said.
“These artists are incredibly skilled and it’s our pleasure to showcase their talents to a wider audience.”
This joint project between the Council and TAFE follows on from a previous partnership in which photographic works were recently placed on display across bin shelters in the town centre.
The students were thrilled to see their creative works being displayed in such an iconic location.
“This partnership with Kiama Council gave our students the exciting opportunity to create artwork for a public audience,” said West Wollongong TAFE Fine Arts/Bachelor of Creative Practice teacher, Rose Harrison.
“Seeing their work installed in the community is incredibly rewarding,” she said.
