Upgrade works at the Margaret and Mackenzie Streets intersection in East Toowoomba will start in late September 2023.
Toowoomba Regional Council (TRC) Infrastructure Services Committee chair, Councillor Carol Taylor said the project is designed to deliver important safety upgrades.
“The project is funded under the Australian Government’s Black Spot Program, which aims to reduce the risk of crashes,” Cr Taylor said.
“The upgrade includes the introduction of traffic signals, which will help people to walk, ride and drive through the busy intersection safely.
“With a number of schools in the area, providing signalised pedestrian crossings on each leg of the intersection is a great safety improvement.”
The design, which was finalised following consultation with nearby residents and interest groups, also includes bicycle awareness zones and kerb and channel works.
“To ensure the safety of our community and our workers during construction, road closures and signed detours will be in place throughout the works,” said Cr Taylor.
“Different sections of the intersection will be closed at various stages of the project as work progresses.
“It’s great to see another Black Spot project underway, as we continue to make our streets safer through better engineering and planning.”
Construction is expected to take three months, weather permitting.
The Australian Government has committed $796,000 under the Black Spot Program to fund the project, with a $100,000 co-contribution from Toowoomba Regional Council.
