A pop-up cycleway at Harris Park in the City of Parramatta local government area is set to become permanent as part of a $3.2 million streetscape overhaul, with the first stage of construction now underway.
The Council says thousands of people have cycled the temporary popup cycleway along Wigram Street and Cambridge Street since its opening in 2021, making it a popular route for people riding to Harris Park and the Parramatta CBD.
Streetscape improvements providing better access and safety along the route will also be completed, including restoring street parking on the southern side of Cambridge Street, a greater tree canopy with more trees being planted, a continuous footpath on Station Street West and undergrounding of overhead powerlines.
Lord Mayor, Martin Zaiter said the popular cycle path is part of a major active transport revolution across the local area.
“Whether you are trying to get to Harris Park station, enjoy the atmosphere of Little India or get to Parramatta CBD, this permanent cycle path will allow you to do so safely,” Lord Mayor Zaiter said.
“More than 86,000 cyclists have used this pop-up cycleway since it opened which proves this infrastructure is needed for the Harris Park community.
“Through extra parking, more trees and undergrounding of powerlines, this project will improve access and the look of Harris Park as it evolves into a key Australian cultural precinct.”
Access for St Oliver’s primary school students will also be improved with a new crossing of Wigram Street and the existing crossing of Allen Street being upgraded to meet current standards.
The project is being funded by the Transport for NSW Get NSW Active program.
