NSW Police are investigating a recent suspected arson attack on a Lake Macquarie City Council building.
Strike Force Komiatum has been established by NSW Police to investigate the blaze that broke out at the Speers Point Administrative Centre in the early hours of 27 November.
The Council has shared CCTV footage with police of two people (pictured, main image) seen outside the building shortly before the fire.
“About 3.50am on Wednesday 27 November 2024, emergency services were called to a building on Main Road, Speers Point, following reports of a fire,” NSW Police said in a statement.
“Officers attached to Lake Macquarie Police District attended and found a council building well alight.
“Fire and Rescue NSW crews worked to extinguish the blaze; however, the building sustained extensive damage with repairs estimated to cost several million dollars.
“Inquiries by strike force detectives have established that two persons were in the vicinity of the council building at the time of the incident,” Police said.

Mayor, Adam Shultz is urging anyone with information or dashcam footage captured in the area between 2-4.30am on Wednesday 27 November to contact Crimestoppers on 1800 333 000.
“We’re grateful for the efforts and bravery of first responders to contain the fire and limit its spread, and also for NSW Police and their hard work rolling out this investigation,” Mayor Shultz said.
Council CEO, Morven Cameron said Council was in regular contact with Strike Force Komiatum detectives.
“They are making progress and we’ve been providing everything they have asked for,” she said.
“We are also working with our insurers on the complex and involved task of assessing the damage and devising a recovery plan.
“We look forward to releasing more information as it comes to light.”
