Blue Mountains City Council has confirmed an investigation is underway following the discovery of deceased and sick birds in Prior Place at Katoomba over recent weeks.
The Council says the birds being found have predominantly been sulphur-crested cockatoos.
“An investigation is currently underway by the Environment Protection Authority (EPA), which is the regulatory authority for these incidents,” Council said in a statement.
Post-mortem and toxicology results, undertaken by the EPA, have identified the birds were poisoned – likely the result of the birds eating poisoned seed.
“This is very sad news and it is very concerning that someone in the community may be intentionally seeking to harm our local wildlife,” said Mayor, Mark Greenhill.
“Council has and will continue to assist the EPA in its investigation of these incidents.”
While the Police and NPWS have been notified, primary responsibility for the investigation and any regulatory action rests with the EPA.
The community are encouraged to report any suspicious activity or unwell wildlife found in or around Prior Place, Katoomba, to the EPA via the NSW Environment Line: 131 555.
