Perth scores major science conference

Hundreds of delegates from around the world will converge on Perth in 2024 for an international science conference being held in Australia for the first time in 12 years.

The 49th International Conference on Infrared, Millimeter and Terahertz Waves – where participants will discuss the use of radio and infrared frequencies in fields as diverse as space science, nuclear fusion and biology – has been secured for Western Australia.

The event will bring together some of the world’s top international researchers to discuss the evolution of the use of ultra-high frequencies in areas such as health, environmental science and telecommunication.

The six-day conference is the largest of its kind and is expected to inject more than $3 million into the WA economy.

“Through Tourism WA, we’re proud to support Business Events Perth to attract delegates to our State through events such as the International Conference on Infrared, Millimeter and Terahertz Waves, and the International Society of Performing Arts Conference,” said Tourism Minister, David Templeman.

“These international events will be a great chance for attendees from across the world to discover the wonderful offerings of Perth and I encourage everyone to stay longer and explore regional WA.

“I’m excited to welcome these events to WA in 2024. To be named as the host of two different internationally recognised conferences within a week highlights our State as an incredible business events and holiday destination, as well as a great science and creative hub.”

Perth has also been named as the host of the 2024 International Society for the Performing Arts (ISPA) Congress – another large-scale event which will bring more than 500 delegates to the State. This is also expected to inject more than $3 million into the State’s economy.

It’s the first time the ISPA Congress will come to Perth. It’s previously been held in Melbourne and Sydney, and at global destinations such as New York and Guadalajara, Mexico.
