City of Parramatta Council has taken home the Boomtown! Project of the Year Awards honour for its innovative Shannons Paddock Playground, celebrating a project that blends local history with play.
The $900,000 district playground was recognised at Western Sydney Leadership Dialogue’s annual awards event last night for its creative design and community impact, transforming a quiet corner in between Westmead and Wentworthville into a new local landmark.
Inspired by the former Shannons Brick Tile and Pottery factory that once operated nearby for more than 70 years, the playground features a striking climbing structure designed to resemble the old warehouse facade with rope climbs, elevated platforms and slides.
Lord Mayor, Martin Zaiter said the award highlights Council’s commitment to creating imaginative spaces that reflect local identity.
“This award is fantastic recognition for a playground that’s a little different, and one that celebrates our local history while giving kids an exciting open place to play,” Lord Mayor Zaiter said.

“We know there’s a shortage of playgrounds that genuinely challenge older kids, so this project responds to a growing need for play spaces designed for older children and teenagers.
“This space was designed so young people can test their limits, build confidence and enjoy the thrill of adventurous play with their friends and it has been very popular since it opened earlier this year.”
The playground also incorporates recycled brick paving, terracotta tones and design details inspired by traditional brickwork patterns – subtle nods to the materials once produced by the historic factory.
Other highlights include quieter areas with swings and stepping elements for younger children as well as shaded spaces where families can relax, all set beneath a canopy of mature turpentine trees.
