Mitchell Shire Council has welcomed a $150 million commitment by the Federal Opposition towards the Camerons Lane/Hume Freeway Diamond Interchange.
Visiting Beveridge on Friday, Opposition Leader, Anthony Albanese said a Labor government would fund the project if elected.
Council says a diamond interchange at Camerons Lane on the Hume Freeway at Beveridge would create up to 20,000 direct and indirect jobs, unlock 30,000 homes and provide access to jobs and services across the Northern Growth Corridor.
“Camerons Lane interchange at Beveridge sits at the heart of one of Australia’s fastest-growing corridors,” Mayor, Bill Chisholm said.
“Critical funding for this project now will support future decades of housing and jobs expansion, that will change the face of Melbourne and northern Victoria.
“The interchange will service both the Hume Freeway and the national rail freight line. It will be one of the most significant and transformation road projects for Melbourne’s north and will position Beveridge as the centre of the next chapter of population growth in the state.”
He said Council had strongly advocated for the interchange which would transform the future of the Shire, supporting growth and the quality of life for local residents.
“The community has told us how important this is, and we urgently need support from the State and Federal Governments.”
“We welcome this significant commitment from the Federal Opposition who have recognised how important this project is. It shows real commitment to the timely delivery of infrastructure, and the delivery of employment opportunities for the rapidly growing population of the Northern Melbourne fringe,” the Mayor said.
