Seymour Shaw Park in Miranda has been officially opened by NSW Premier, Chris Minns, following more than $12 million in Stage 2 upgrades to deliver major improvements to sporting fields, clubhouse amenities and spectator facilities for the local community.
The Premier joined Sutherland Shire Mayor, Jack Boyd and local sporting clubs, community members and project partners on Saturday to unveil a commemorative plaque and celebrate the completion of the latest stage of the Seymour Shaw Park Masterplan.
The upgraded district sporting precinct now features multi-use playing fields designed to support cricket, soccer and netball, a new clubhouse and public amenities building, improved spectator seating, accessible pathways, new lighting, cricket nets, landscaping, off-street parking and integrated public art.
The project was supported by almost $3 million from the NSW Government’s Accelerated Infrastructure Fund, alongside Council developer contributions, internal reserves and support from the Australian Cricket Infrastructure Fund via Cricket NSW.
Mayor Boyd said the completion of Stage 2 marked a major milestone in the long-term transformation of one of the Shire’s most loved sporting and recreation precincts.
“Seymour Shaw Park has long been a home for local sport, and these upgrades ensure it will continue to serve our community for generations to come,” he said.
“This is a tremendous outcome for local cricketers, soccer players, netballers, families and spectators, who can now enjoy modern facilities that better support training, competition and the game day experience.
“Council endorsed the Seymour Shaw Park Masterplan in 2021 with a clear vision to create a more inclusive, accessible and high-quality district sporting precinct. With Stage 2 now complete, we are seeing that vision come to life.
“These works build on the success of the Seymour Shaw Youth Precinct delivered in Stage 1 and further cement Seymour Shaw Park as one of the premier sporting and recreation destinations in Sutherland Shire.
“I’m especially pleased this project has delivered not only better sports infrastructure, but also improved public spaces, accessible connections, landscaping and striking new murals created by talented artists, most of whom are local to the Shire.”
Premier Minns said the NSW Government was proud to support infrastructure that helps communities grow, connect and participate in local sport.
“This upgrade is exactly the kind of project that growing communities like the Shire need,” Mr Minns said.
“Local sporting clubs are at the heart of communities across NSW, and facilities like Seymour Shaw Park help ensure more people can take part in the sports they love close to home.
“This $3 million investment by the government has helped deliver better playing surfaces, modern amenities and improved spectator facilities that will benefit thousands of residents in Miranda and across the wider Sutherland Shire.”
Stage 2 of the Seymour Shaw Park Masterplan follows the completion of the Stage 1 youth precinct in 2023, which delivered a skate park, children’s playground, parkour activity area and half basketball court.
The Stage 2 works included:
- levelling and upgrading the sporting fields
- improved field drainage and irrigation
- high-quality turf areas for cricket, soccer and netball
- a new amenities building with public toilets, change rooms, meeting space and supporting sport facilities
- a viewing platform and terraced spectator seating
- accessible pathways around the precinct
- new lighting to support evening training and competition
- cricket nets and supporting sports infrastructure
- landscaping, new trees and garden beds
- off-street parking improvements; and
- integrated public art murals.
Five artists, Merindah Funnell, Bruno Mota, Mulga, Ox King and Ellie Warner, were selected through an Expression of Interest process to create murals across prominent walls in the precinct. The artworks celebrate themes including First Nations flora and fauna, local sport, the natural environment and family inspiration.
The official opening was held as part of a community celebration featuring sporting activations, family-friendly activities, local clubs and community representatives. The sporting fields will be temporarily closed to allow the new turf to establish and will be ready for competition later this year or early 2027.
