The City of Swan Council is working with the WA Government to progress the stalled Ellenbrook Leisure Centre project, with a new Aquatic Strategy to be presented at the Council’s next meeting.
In March 2022, due to rising construction costs and the withdrawal of a second builder from delivery of an approved construction tender, the Council paused development of the project and initiated a strategic aquatic review.
Late last year, Mayor, David Lucas and Chief Executive Officer, Stephen Cain, met with WA Minister for Planning, Rita Saffioti and Member for Swan Hills, Jessica Shaw to discuss options for the State Government to further assist the City with progression of the important community project.
During the meeting, Minister Saffioti advised that the State would consider providing further assistance for the project, with the Government to consider allocating land adjacent to the new Ellenbrook train station for the aquatic centre.
Minisiter Saffioti and Ms Shaw, along with a representative from the office of Ms Tania Lawrence (Member for Hasluck) all stressed their desire to see the City placed in the best position to deliver the project.
“At our last Ordinary Council Meeting, Council was presented with a proposal to relocate the aquatic elements of the Ellenbrook Leisure Centre closer to the Ellenbrook train station,” Council said in a statement.
“Council resolved to seek some additional information from the State Government so the new location can be considered in the City’s new Aquatic Strategy.
“We look forward to presenting our new Aquatic Strategy at a future Ordinary Council Meeting,” it said.
