A new purpose-built lifeguard tower is taking shape at Sawtell and is on track to be open by the end of the week, City of Coffs Harbour Council has confirmed.
Prefabricated by Emineo Engineering Services, the new Sawtell structure was bolted together on site and took just four days to build.
“The incredible erosion we saw right across the East Coast undermined a lot of beach infrastructure and that included the old lifeguard tower at Sawtell,” said Mayor, Nikki Williams.
“For safety reasons, the old tower had to be brought down but fortunately it was scheduled to be replaced so the service to the community won’t miss a beat when the season opens on Saturday.”
Featuring three panoramic windows and a staircase access, the new Sawtell tower is made of aluminium and has a minimum expiry life of 15 years even in the harsh salty environment on the coastline.
“All that remains is the final fitout for things like the electrics, including the broadcasting system,” said Council Infrastructure Acting Director, Daniel Noble.
“The tower is a temporary structure in that it can be moved if there is a need to do so.
“It’s being positioned just south of the Surf Club and has great vision up and down the beach.”
Meanwhile, temporary aluminium access steps have also been installed at Diggers Beach which was also impacted by erosion.
“The new steps will provide ready access to Diggers and we’re pleased to have them in place in time for the start of the holidays,” Mr Noble said.
