A new chapter is underway at Maitland Showground, with Maitland City Council and the Hunter River Agricultural and Horticultural Association signing a three-year partnership agreement to support the iconic space into the future.
The agreement brings both parties together, with the shared goal of driving sustainable improvements at the showground and supporting the needs of the wider community.
Several priorities have been identified including the development of a landscape master plan for the site, road and pathway improvements, ongoing pothole repairs and continued sponsorship for key events like Maitland Show.
Covering almost 20 hectares and owned and managed by the Association, Maitland Showground is a landmark venue for the city that welcomes more than 400,000 visitors every year and hosts events every week from harness racing and camping to the Maitland Community Markets.
President of the Hunter River Agricultural and Horticultural Association, Margaret Enright said the agreement will help the showground to improve visitor experiences for both locals and tourists.
“By working with Council to deliver key improvements to the site, we can ensure a bright future at Maitland Showground and continue to host amazing events that draw big crowds,” she said.
The partnership will also bring Maitland Showground on board as a major accommodation provider for next year’s 40th anniversary of the Burton Automotive Hunter Valley Steamfest and 20th Biennial National Rally, which is expected to bring thousands of visitors to the city for a big weekend of steam.
Maitland City Council General Manager, Jeff Smith said the organisation was proud to work in partnership with the Association to support the showground for the future.
“Maitland Showground is an icon of our city and we want to see it thrive for many years to come,” Mr Smith said.
“By working together, we can create more opportunities for local events, bring greater economic benefits to Maitland and deliver an improved showground experience for our wider community.”
Pending other commitments, Council will allocate available staff and resources to support ongoing planning, improvements and operations at the site as part of the three-year program of works.
