New-look amenities coming to Rutherford oval

Maitland City Council has turned the first sod at Max McMahon Oval in Rutherford, as construction officially kicks off on a new $3.1 million amenities building project.

Co-funded with a $3 million investment from the Australian Government and Council contributions covering the remainder, the new amenities building is set to boost the user experience for local sporting groups and improve accessibility.

It will include four unisex changerooms and accessible public amenities, a canteen, first aid and referee rooms, a timekeeping room, tiered seating with an outdoor covered area and an accessible entry.

Mayor, Philip Penfold says the upgrade “will be a major improvement for local clubs, particularly Maitland Saints AFL club.”

“We worked very closely with Maitland Saints who did a lot of the leg work to secure this grant funding and helped us come up with the most suitable design, and we’re proud to see work is now underway,” Mayor Penfold said.

“These upgraded amenities will be a huge boost to the club and the wider community, while improving accessibility and supporting greater participation in sport.”

Federal Member for Paterson, Meryl Swanson said it was great to see the 2022 election commitment coming to life with the upgrade at Max McMahon Oval in Rutherford.

“This project is the result of the Australian Government working hand in hand with local Council and sporting groups to deliver the facilities our community needs to thrive,” said Ms Swanson.

To make way for the upgrade, the existing amenities building (pictured, above) will be demolished and temporary amenities installed on site while construction takes place.

Work is expected to be completed in January 2026, weather permitting.
