City of Parramatta Council has celebrated the completion and naming of Carlingford’s new $3.2 million pavilion at Peggy Womersley Reserve.
Council says the newly named JJ Brown Pavilion brings the facilities at the much-loved ground into the 21st century, with new changerooms, storage facilities and a kiosk.
“Carlingford deserves state-of-the-art facilities. The new JJ Brown Pavilion has everything a local sports team needs off the field to back a win on the field,” said Council CEO, Gail Connolly PSM.
“It’s an exciting step forward as we transform Peggy Womersley Reserve and other suburban grounds into top quality sports facilities.”
Minister for Sport, Steve Kamper said projects like the Carlingford reserve show the NSW Government’s commitment to helping create spaces and facilities that enable communities to enjoy and take part in sport.
“Local sporting infrastructure plays a critical role in keeping communities healthy, active and connected and these new facilities mean the Peggy Womersley Reserve will better meets the needs of the Carlingford for years to come,” said Mr Kamper.
The new pavilion has been named in honour of the former Federal Member for Parramatta, John Joseph Brown AO (pictured, above left), who served the community in Federal Parliament for 13 years from 1977.
During his tenure, Mr Brown held multiple Ministerial portfolios including Arts, Sport, Environment and Territories. He was also the founding Chairman of the Tourism Task Force (now the Tourism and Transport Forum) and founder and patron of the Sport and Tourism Youth Foundation.
Mr Brown was made an Officer of the Order of Australia in 1993 for service to the Australian parliament, tourism, sport and recreation.
The J.J. Brown Pavilion was funded by City of Parramatta, assisted by $1 million in funding from the NSW Government’s Greater Cities Sport Facility Fund.
