City of Melville Council is kicking goals for female participation in sport following the construction of new $3.5 million clubrooms and changerooms at Len Shearer Reserve in Booragoon.
The new building includes a universal access toilet, umpires’ room and storage in line with the City’s goal of providing multipurpose facilities that encourage healthy lifestyles and wellbeing.
The Council received a combined $1.4 million from the State Government for the refurbishment through the Community Sporting and Recreation Facilities Fund ($1.2 million) and the Legacy Grants for Women’s National Premier Clubs ($200,000).
“The City is very appreciative of the State Government’s contribution of $1.4 million to this project, via the Community Sporting and Recreation Facilities Fund and the Legacy Grants for Women’s National Premier Clubs,” said Mayor, Katy Mair.
“The City’s investment into this facility enhances Len Shearer Reserve and supports an increased demand from all sports for non-gender specific facilities catering for female participation in sport.
“We recognise the importance of providing inclusive multipurpose facilities that encourage healthy lifestyles and wellbeing and I’m sure this facility will benefit generations to come.”
A community celebration day is planned for later this year, where the wider public will be invited to see the refurbished facility.

The project is part of Council’s Active Reserve Infrastructure Strategy and enhances one of its important local facilities to meet the needs of female athletes and support the growth of local sporting clubs.
