Muswellbrook council takes action on flying fox influx

Muswellbrook Shire Council is supporting residents affected by a rise in grey-headed flying fox numbers with free access to high-pressure cleaning equipment to remove droppings.

The Council says flying fox numbers have increased in Muswellbrook following a recent flowering event in the Shire.

An estimated 50,000 grey-headed flying foxes are currently living in the Shire with the main camp forming along Muscle Creek.

“For residents who encounter problems with flying fox droppings, Council can facilitate the hire of a high-pressure water gurney at no cost,” Council said in a statement.

“Council can also provide residents with washing line and car covers, with residents near the flying fox camp given first preference.

“The grey-headed flying fox is listed as vulnerable under the federal Environmental Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act, meaning it is an offence to harm or disturb them.

“We’d also remind residents not to handle flying foxes and, if you find an orphaned, sick, injured or dead flying fox, call WIRES on 1300 094 737.”

Residents seeking support for grey-headed flying foxes can contact Council at (02) 6549 3700.
