Murrumbidgee Council is currently surveying local farmers and rural residents to gauge demand for the collection of household waste from property entrances.
Council General Manager, John Scarce said the survey will gather feedback from rural residents about implementing a roadside collection service for garbage and recycling.
Mr Scarce said preliminary consultation has shown people on rural properties were very interested in this service.
“We have now proceeded to formal consultation and if there is sufficient demand for this service it will commence on 1 July 2024,” he said.
“Indicative pricing is a maximum of $495 per annum if this service is provided fortnightly using 240L bins or $320 per annum if this service is provided monthly using 360L bins (based on current prices).”
Mr Scarce continued, “This is the next phase in Council’s progressive strategy to improve and streamline waste management in the Murrumbidgee Council area”.
“It follows on from the introduction of collection services for Food Organics Garden Organics (FOGO) for urban households and businesses across the whole Council area, as well as recycling for Jerilderie.
“We now collect all three of these types of urban waste using our own garbage collection truck. If the rural service proceeds, it is proposed that we also provide this service in-house.
“This not only provides more jobs to locals, but is the most cost effective way of providing this service,” he said.
The survey has been sent to all household properties. It is also available online at www.surveymonkey.com/r/9VCFXC9) and from Council offices. It closes at 5 pm on Wednesday 9 August.
