Moreland City Council staff strike closes libraries

Ongoing strike action has affected services across Victoria’s Moreland City Council facilities today.

In a statement this afternoon, Council said “there will be some impacts to Council services today while staff members take protected industrial action”.

Some services, such as household waste collection, may be delayed by up to 24 hours, and some council facilities will be closed, Council said.

The strike action also sees libraries across the city closed this afternoon, while Counihan Gallery will also be closed until tomorrow.

Council said the Brunswick Customer Service Centre has closed to the public and won’t reopen until 8.30am tomorrow.

Members of the Australian Services Union launched work bans on April 20 over what they claim is Council management’s wage rise offer that fell short of the inflation rate.

The bans place restrictions on street cleaning and sweeping, litter pick up, and collection of garbage on Council-owned reserves. Other actions include rejection of non-urgent requests by councillors and non-urgent Council fleet servicing.
