Maitland’s cultural diversity will take centre stage this October when Riverlights returns for five days of celebration across the city.
From Tuesday 6 to Saturday 10 October, residents and visitors can experience food, music, performance, art and traditions from around the world, culminating in the free Riverlights main event at The Levee Central Maitland on Saturday 10 October from 2pm to 9pm.
Maitland Mayor, Philip Penfold said Riverlights was one of the city’s most anticipated community events and an opportunity for people to come together and celebrate what makes Maitland such a diverse community.
“Our city is growing, and with that growth comes a richer mix of cultures, traditions and experiences. Riverlights is a chance to celebrate that diversity, bring people together and share the stories and traditions that make Maitland such a vibrant place to live,” said Mayor Penfold.
“I encourage everyone to come along to The Levee on Saturday 10 October, explore the cultural villages and enjoy the performances and activities before the parade and spectacular light show bring the Hunter River to life.”
Across the five-day program, visitors can get hands-on with cultural workshops, learn new languages and stories, and explore creative traditions at venues including Maitland libraries and Maitland Regional Art Gallery.
The celebrations will culminate on Saturday 10 October, with more than 50 nations and cultures represented at The Levee. Visitors can explore over 20 cultural villages, sample traditional food, enjoy live performances and fashion from around the world, and pick up their free ‘Cultural Passport’ to help guide their experience, collecting stamps from the villages they visit along the way.
As the sun sets, the celebrations will continue along the Hunter River with the Riverlights parade and much-loved lantern flotilla, before concluding with a spectacular light show.
