Australia’s peak body for sustainable building design has awarded one of Moonee Valley City Council’s newest constructions top marks for environment sustainability.
Djerring Flemington Hub has received 5-Star Green Star rating in Building design and construction from the Green Building Council of Australia (GBCA). The highly sought after accolade is only presented to buildings that demonstrate ‘Australian excellence’ in environmental sustainability.
To achieve Green Star rating, Council needed to successfully demonstrate the sustainability and liveability of the entire project – from design through to construction and operation. GBCA considered various factors like indoor air quality; energy efficiency; water use, and material selection.
Djerring Flemington Hub opened in 2023, providing residents of Flemington and the broader Moonee Valley a vital meeting, learning and recreation space.
The first Moonee Valley building to receive a 5-Star Green Star rating, Djerring Flemington Hub features:
- solar panels on the north and north-west facing roof
- rainwater harvesting
- natural lighting and ventilation
- a high performing building envelope design that maximises heating and cooling efficiency
Mayor, Ava Adams said the certification showed Council was on track to achieving the MV2040 vision of a healthy and resilient Moonee Valley where people can live locally and sustainably.
“This is a significant achievement, and it demonstrates Council’s commitment to sustainability and climate action,” she said.
“With buildings responsible for more than one quarter of the world’s energy-related emissions, we need to take seriously the impact new buildings will have on future generations.
“Moonee Valley residents can be sure that Djerring Flemington Hub will remain a great space for the community – and for the environment – well into the future,” said the Mayor.
