Merri-bek City Council has closed the doors to Fawkner Leisure Centre as the facility prepares to undergo a $36.8 million redevelopment before reopening for the 2024/25 summer season.
Mayor, Angelica Panopoulos and Councillor Sue Bolton visited the Centre on its last day of operation to read farewell messages from visitors and members on the centre’s entry way.
Council says the redeveloped aquatic centre will be more accessible, environmentally friendly and provide more options for all ages and abilities to participate in a healthy and active lifestyle.
Fawkner Leisure Centre is one of six aquatic and leisure centres owned by Council.
A 20-year Aquatic and Leisure Strategy was developed by the Council in 2018 to determine the future position of all six Merri-bek Aquatic and Leisure Facilities. Within this strategy, Fawkner Leisure Centre was flagged for redevelopment into a district-level facility due to its age.
Built Environs has been appointed as the contract builder for the new centre.
