Melville Men’s Shed back in business after $876k facelift

The Melville Community Men’s Shed is back in business after receiving a major refurbishment by City of Melville Council.

The Men’s Shed was reopened on Sunday by Mayor, Katy Mair, alongside Federal Member for Tangney, Sam Lim; Member for Bicton, Lisa O’Malley; Councillors and Council Chief Executive Officer, Gail Bowman.

The Shed closed temporarily in April to allow for the $876,000 refurbishment to take place, which includes an upgraded common room, new passenger lift, refurbished toilets, a plant room for a new dust extraction system, as well as a new kitchen and training room.

Club members can now come together in a much more functional and accessible space that is fit for purpose and offers a much larger space for community members to visit and participate.

The Australian Government contributed $250,000 towards the Men’s Shed under the Investing in Our Communities program, and the WA Government contributing $50,000 towards a new dust extraction system.

“I am delighted that the Melville Community Men’s Shed is back up and running after receiving a much-needed refurbishment,” said Mayor Mair.

“The City of Melville recognises the importance of places where the community can build social connections and the Melville Community Men’s Shed is an important hub within the City for bringing both men and women together, not only to build and create things on the tools, but to also build and make new friends.

“We’re grateful for the $250,000 funding from the Australian Government towards the upgrade to improve the amenities and make it more accessible, along with $50,000 from the WA Government towards the installation of a new dust extraction system.

“This refurbishment is another great example of the work the City is undertaking to ensure we are promoting healthy and inclusive communities.”
