Major health conference for Wyndham

Senior clinicians, GPs, mental health experts and professionals will gather in Wyndham in September for a major conference to discuss the harmful effects of alcohol.

The Alcohol Harm Reduction – Benefits of Collaboration conference will be held at the Encore Events Centre in Hoppers Crossing.

Wyndham Mayor and Healthy City portfolio holder, Adele Hegedich said: “The conference is a great opportunity for all health professionals and students to network and connect with other services in the sector.”

“Many in the community have recently participated in the ‘Dry July’ campaign and this conference will explore issues such as the impact alcohol has on our community.”

The event will feature Jack Nagle (pictured), one of the leading motivational speakers on drugs and alcohol in Australia.

“The conference is a great opportunity for industry professionals including clinicians, mental health professionals, students and academics and those who work in the homelessness sector or family violence services to network and work more collaboratively,” Mayor Hegedich said.

“Wyndham residents have faced many challenges over the past year. With increasing anxiety, stress, job insecurity and pressure on relationships, it is no wonder alcohol consumption has increased.

“Studies show high levels of alcohol consumption can lead to serious and ongoing health problems.

“Wyndham City is committed to creating and nurturing a healthy City and it is important that Council plays a role in advocating and promoting healthy choices.

“Adults are recommended to drink no more than 10 standard drinks a week to reduce their risk of illness. The less you drink, the lower your risk of harm.”

The conference will be held from 9.30am to 3pm on 7 September. If there are COVID-19 restrictions in place in September, then the conference will be held on online.
