Lord Mayors putting cities on the national agenda

Australia’s capital city Lord Mayors say they are looking forward to working with the newly re-elected Albanese Labor Government, having met recently to discuss shared city priorities.

The Mayors say tackling the housing and homelessness crisis, addressing climate change, delivering infrastructure and ensuring Australian cities are safe are shared priorities for all levels of government.

“I want to congratulate the Prime Minister and his party on their historic re-election. I was encouraged by the Prime Minister’s victory speech and his optimism for Australia’s future,” said Council of Capital City Lord Mayors 2025 Chair, Clover Moore AO (pictured, left).

“Australians have overwhelmingly called for bold action on climate change, renewable energy, and housing affordability. These are all national priorities, but they’re also priorities for our capital cities – and I’m looking forward to working with the government to deliver in these areas over the next parliamentary term.

“Our capital cities are the engine room of our national economy and its important we work together to unlock their potential – to help us realise our national potential and drive long-term prosperity.”

City of Melbourne Lord Mayor, Nick Reece (pictured, right) said local government needs to work in partnership with the Federal government to tackle the challenges here now – as well as those on the horizon.

“In Anthony Albanese we have the most qualified Prime Minister in our history to tackle the growth challenges of Australian cities,” he said.

“Cities are the backbone of our country – 70% of Australia’s population lives in the capital cities of our states and territories. And 90% of our population growth will occur in the cities over the next two decades.”

“If our cities are doing well, then Australia is doing well.”

“I’m thrilled to see a Minister for Cities in Cabinet in Claire O’Neil. The next step is to hold a Productivity Commission into Australia’s capital cities and their competitiveness on the global stage.”

The Council of Capital City Lord Mayors is a peak body advocating for the interests of Australia’s capital cities. Its mission is to provide national leadership and enable effective coordination, advocacy and representation for our capital cities.
