Residents with a head for heights have been wowed by the City of Coffs Harbour Council’s first ever Open Day.
More than 1,000 people poured through the gates at the C.ex Coffs International Stadium on Sunday for an educational and entertaining voyage.
“Crikey, what a fantastic turnout. The Open Day was an opportunity for the City to showcase and explain the diverse range of services and products we offer to the community,” said Council Business Services Director, Steve Bayliss.
“There was a host of interactive experiences for the whole family.
“The most popular activities were a ride on a cherry picker, the free sausage sizzle and learning where poo goes after the toilet bowl is flushed.”
Other favourites included art and craft-making tables, putting the remote-controlled mower through its paces and photos in front of Council’s ‘media wall’.
“The Open Day attracted a huge number of young families, including quite a few who have recently moved to the area,” Mr Bayliss said.
“Certainly there were plenty of activities to keep the kids engaged, and we had some great lucky door prizes and useful merchandise for people to take away like compost caddies.”
The weather was kind to visitors, with light drizzle holding off until the final hour of the event.
Several residents were there to explore career opportunities with the Council, which employs a workforce that includes engineers, scientists and accountants through to positions in tourism, the arts, customer service and sports management.
“The heavy plant – the big machines – were on show and they were magnets for people of all ages,” Mr Bayliss said.
“We were able to engage directly with the community and show people how we test water through to interactive mapping where residents can identify their own home, how it’s zoned, and what utility services are nearby.”
