Local legend elected Bellingen Deputy Mayor

Bellingen Shire Councillor and local community legend, Graeme Shephard, has been unanimously elected Deputy Mayor at the Council’s June meeting, replacing Councillor Ellie Tree, who recently stepped down from the role.

The Council says Cr Shephard (pictured), a well-known and loved member of the Dorrigo community, brings a wealth of local knowledge and connections to his role as Councillor and Deputy Mayor.

Born and bred on the plateau, Cr Shephard drives the school bus, is secretary of the Dorrigo High School P&C, a member of the Dorrigo Chamber of Commerce, and a fireman with Fire & Rescue. He is also a carpenter by trade and uses those skills to assist anyone in need, said Bellingen Shire Mayor, Steve Allan.

“I am pleased to welcome Graeme into the role of Deputy Mayor, and I look forward to working closely with him over the rest of the council term,” said Mayor Allan.

“Graeme brings a strong community focus and hands-on experience to the role, which I believe will be of great benefit to the Shire.

“His local knowledge and connections will strengthen Council’s decision making and engagement with our communities, and I look forward to working closely with him for the remainder of the Council term.”

Cr Shephard said he was pleased and honoured to accept the nomination and unanimous support of his fellow Councillors.

“I am looking forward to serving the Bellingen Shire in my capacity as Councillor, as well as supporting Mayor Allan in the work he does in leading this Council,” he said.

“I see my role as a friendly and accessible conduit from the community to Council and will advocate to ensure that the Bellingen Shire and its residents thrive in every area of life.”
