Liverpool Youth Councillor, Tamisha Matara, has represented Australia at the United Nations Fourth Session of the United Nations Permanent Forum on People of African Descent.
Liverpool Mayor, Ned Mannoun said Tamisha’s selection demonstrates the value of Liverpool Council’s Young Councillor program, which identifies talented young residents and brings them to a forum where they can shape council policy.
“Tamisha is an Australian born Zimbabwean who is a passionate youth advocate, youth content creator, and university student dedicated to empowering multicultural communities,” Mayor Mannoun said.
“She has a passion for utilising social media to empower and help elevate young people into conversations with decision makers.
“Council have her some financial support and we look forward to hearing about her experienced being on the world stage at the United Nations.
“Recently she helped Council with a number of social media projects including recruiting the next groups of young people to become the Youth Council committee of 2025-2027 and also to promote Youth Week to the people of Liverpool.”
Tamisha said being invited to go to New York for a United Nations convention was an amazing opportunity and would help shape her goals for being an advocate in the community.
“I’ve been invited to attend the Permanent Forum on People of African Descent at the United Nations in New York, where global leaders, advocates, and policy makers will discuss ways to advance the rights of African communities worldwide,” she said.
“This is an incredible opportunity for me to represent young African Australians, share our stories, and contribute to discussions shaping our future.”
The Permanent Forum coincided with 2025 Youth Week in NSW, which celebrates every young person’s unique strengths, and recognises their individual and collective power as our current and future influencers, leaders and decision makers.
