Liverpool Mayor humbled by local support

Liverpool City Council Mayor, Ned Mannoun, has thanked local residents for their support on polling day as he looks set to retain the City’s top job.

Polling results for the Council’s mayoral race have Mayor Mannoun with 43.8% of votes as official counting came to a close last night.

“Liverpool, I thank you, you have chosen democracy over politics and you’ve chosen the plan that my team will continue to deliver for our community,” Mayor Mannoun wrote in a post to his Facebook page last night.

In a public appearance (pictured) earlier in the evening, he said his team had “had to fight tooth and nail” to give the city’s residents the right to vote.

“It was very tough for us. Many of you here, many around us stood by us. We had long nights working to fight for the right just to have an election”

“Thankfully we got to where we are today. Today is the day. It seems to be with us.”

In response, the crowd gathered at the event chanted “Ned is back”.

“I just want to say to each of every one of you out there, to the people who have voted for us today who have supported us, thank you for believing in us.”

“The honour to have your name on a ballot paper… it is so humbling and when someone puts that number next to you, it’s so humbling and thank you for this opportunity.”

The vote for his nearest Mayoral opponent, Labor councillor, Betty Green, was sitting at 26.2% at the close of counting last night.

Vote counting will resume tomorrow.
