Lightbox installations brighten Bayside gardens

The work of nationally renowned photographer, Jane Burton, will illuminate Billilla gardens on Halifax Street in Brighton with a lightbox art installation until the end of October.

Bayside City Council’s lightbox project at Billilla commissions three contemporary artists to engage with the site and create three artworks for display on temporary lightboxes installed on the fence line from July to December 2023.

Mark Forbes was the first artist to display his works, choosing to engage with a professional ballerina to produce exquisite imagery inside Billilla mansion.

From September to the end of October, Jane Burton will display her photographic collections at both Billilla gardens and at Bayside Gallery.

“Jane Burton works largely with female subjects to create mysterious images with gothic overtones. Her works often allude to the histories of the sites she depicts, capturing elemental remnants associated with past activities and personalities,” Council said in a statement.

“Burton’s commissioned works draw on the previous matriarchs of Billilla, Mrs Jeanie Weatherly and her daughters Violet and Gladys, who variously lived at Billilla from 1888 to 1972.”

Jane Burton’s imagery will be on display from September to 31 October 2023 before the lightboxes change over to the next exhibition by photographer, Kent Morris.

The Jane Burton: Returning exhibition is now showing until 5 November at Bayside Gallery, Brighton Town Hall.
