Construction works are underway on a $3.1 million upgrade of Launceston’s Northern Regional Tennis Centre, which is set to deliver a new 320 square metre clubhouse facility.
The project has received $300,000 in funding from the City of Launceston Council, $500,000 from the Federal Government, $300,000 from Tennis Australia and $2 million from the Tasmanian Government.
Mayor, Matthew Garwood said the Council had lodged a Development Application for the project in January and last month awarded the construction tender to Fairbrother.
“The Council has collaborated with a wide range of stakeholders to ensure this project can be completed by the end of the year, giving Tennis Australia sufficient time to set up for the
Launceston International tournament in January next year,” Mayor Garwood said.
“The project involves repurposing a portion of the car park area and relocating Court No 3 in order to accommodate the new building.
“The new clubhouse will have a contemporary design, multi-functional accessible spaces with improved patron viewing areas directly on to the surrounding courts.
“I’m thrilled to see work underway and look forward to seeing the new building opened and ready for use later this year.”
