Launceston council to serve up Cataract Gorge Restaurant restoration

City of Launceston Council is breathing new life into one of the city’s most cherished landmarks with a $300,000 investment in essential renewal works at the historic Gorge Restaurant in Cataract Gorge.

Originally built in 1898 as tearooms (replacing earlier refreshment tents), the building has long been a beloved dining spot nestled in the stunning cliff grounds of Cataract Gorge Reserve.

Over its more than 125-year history, it has welcomed generations of locals and visitors seeking meals with one of Tasmania’s most spectacular natural backdrops.

At its February meeting, Councillors voted to lease the operation of the Gorge Restaurant to Gunn & Parkinson, the operators of the Basin Café, following practical completion of the building works.

Practical completion is anticipated before the end of the current financial year.

The project focuses on critical improvements to:

  • Footings and structural elements
  • Internal layout for better functionality
  • Interiors to enhance comfort and appeal

The Council says the targeted upgrades will improve the building’s condition, safety, and usability – ensuring it remains fit for purpose and attractive to new generations of diners for years to come.

Mayor, Matthew Garwood said the investment reflected the Council’s dedication to preserving and enhancing Launceston’s iconic attractions.

“Cataract Gorge is one of those places that really defines Launceston. It brings together nature, history and hospitality in a way that’s pretty special,” he said.

“Renewing this historic building protects an important part of our story while also supporting local business and tourism, and backing Launceston’s status as a UNESCO City of Gastronomy.

“I’m looking forward to seeing locals and visitors enjoying great food and those views again in a refreshed space before long.”

The Gorge Restaurant is expected to reopen to the public later in 2026 once works are complete and the new operator is ready.
