Kiama Council has begun its first ever comprehensive survey of the municipality’s roads network.
The Council is responsible for approximately 280km of roads, from Riverside Drive in the north to Crooked River Road in the south, Blowhole Point Road in the east and Jamberoo Mountain Road to the west.
“We’ve contracted SHEPHERD asset management solutions to conduct the survey, using vehicle-mounted technology that captures high-definition images, GPS and roughness data every 10 metres, to produce a condition rating,” Council said in a statement.
“The survey vehicle will be travelling around our area like any other car, meaning few disruptions to motorists and residents.”
It says the resulting road condition maps will help the Council to make more informed decisions about when, where and how much to spend on maintenance.
“This will not only help our motorists by providing safe and accessible roads, but our community, by improving how we invest in local infrastructure,” Council said.
The road survey includes Jamberoo Mountain Road, Wallaby Hill Road and Foxground Road.
The Council says these locations have suffered significant damage over five separate storm events, requiring extensive restoration works.
“Surveying these roads will assist Kiama Council to determine the most appropriate expenditure of close to $4.5 million in betterment funding being provided by the NSW Government,” it said.
“The betterment funding means Council can make long-term improvements to these roads that will allow them to better withstand severe storms and flooding.
“Kiama Council thanks the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development for its funding support through the NSW Betterment Program – Infrastructure Betterment Fund (IBF).”
Council also thanked the Office of Local Government for its support via a NSW Severe Weather and Flood Grant.
