Kiama Municipal Council Mayor, Cameron McDonald says he is appalled by a recent increase in vandalism, with a toilet block adjacent to Kiama Harbour damaged in the early hours of Monday morning in the latest incident.
The Mayor said the toilet block (pictured) was trashed and lit on fire before authorities were notified and the blaze was extinguished.
Council staff were forced to close the Black Beach foreshore facility due to the extensive damage to the toilets, walls and ceiling.
Vandals also caused damage to other toilet blocks and artworks at the Kiama Sculpture Walk in April. With Kiama Police Station only staffed during daylight hours, the Council is concerned over the increase in late-night antisocial behaviour.
Mayor McDonald said he would be speaking with Kiama MP, Katelin McInerney, about efforts to identify solutions to the problem.
“I am disgusted by this kind of senseless and costly damage to our public facilities,” he said.
“If anyone has any information on who vandalised this toilet block, I urge them to contact the Police.”
