Kiama Municipal Council says workers acted quickly when a waste truck was forced to dump its load after a fire was identified in the rear compactor yesterday.
The incident occurred 7am on Monday on Kiama’s central Manning Street, with the driver able to safely park then dump the load at the pavilion carpark, Council said in a statement.
“Council thanks Fire and Rescue NSW for their work managing and extinguishing fire,” it said.

“Council and Avcon have controlled the immediate site and will work to clean up any debris and arranged for appropriate disposal of the vehicle.”
The Council said it will undertake an investigation into the possible causes of the fire.
“At this early stage it is assumed the likely cause is due to incorrect battery disposal.”
“Council staff will also be completing an incident report and debriefing. Our thanks to our staff who also quickly responded, ensuring the safety of the public and that no one was hurt in the incident,” Council stated.
