Horticulture blitz for Healesville

Yarra Ranges Council’s Parks and Bushlands team have been out in force this week for a ‘horticulture blitz’ in Healesville.

Council says team members came together in a concentrated effort to clean up regularly frequented areas of Healesville, such as Coronation Park and Main St.

Works included in the blitz were the trimming of overhanging branches, maintenance of gravel paths, cleaning up garden beds, planting, pruning and trimming.

Pre-COVID, horticultural blitzes had been held in various areas of the municipality over previous years, but due to workplace social distancing measures, have had to be put on hold until more recent times.

Ryrie Ward Councillor, Fiona McAllister said it was great that the horticultural blitzes could take place again.

“Essentially, these blitzes are the work that our Parks and Bushland teams do on a daily basis, but concentrated into a small area for one day to spruce everything up,” Cr McAllister.

“We’ve had some really positive feedback in the past from the community when we’ve held these blitzes, so it’s fantastic to see our teams being able to come together in numbers and do more of them again.

“For Healesville in particular, there are more than 15,000 roses in the main business district area and anyone who’s been through the town in spring and summer knows just how beautiful it all looks when they are in bloom.

“For that to occur however, the pruning must take place now so that was just one of the key parts of today’s blitz.”
