Hornsby Mayor joins community in grieving ‘unimaginable loss’ of pregnant mum and baby

Hornsby Shire Council Mayor, Warren Waddell, has expressed his deep shock and sadness over the loss of a mother and her unborn child after a shocking traffic accident on Friday night.

Shortly after 8pm on Friday, emergency services responded to reports that a pedestrian had been struck by a vehicle at the entrance of a carpark on George Street in Hornsby.

Police will allege a Kia Carnival was struck from behind by a BMW causing it to crash into the pedestrian. NSW Ambulance paramedics treated the 33-year-old pedestrian, who was eight months pregnant, at the scene. She was taken to Westmead Hospital in a critical condition where she and the unborn baby later died.

“On behalf of the Council, staff and community of Hornsby Shire, I would like to express my deep shock and sadness at the tragic accident that occurred in Hornsby this weekend, which claimed the life of a young mother and her unborn child,” said Mayor Waddell.

“I extend my sincere condolences to her family and loved ones and pray that they can find some peace at this time of unbearable grief. 

“My thoughts are also with all those affected by this heartbreaking incident, including those who witnessed it.

“I also want to extend my sincere gratitude to our first responders for their professionalism and compassion in such difficult and confronting circumstances. Their dedication to our community in times of tragedy is truly commendable.

“This is an unimaginable loss, and our community grieves alongside the family during this devastating time.”

The driver of the BMW – a 19-year-old man – and the driver of the Kia Carnival – a 48-year-old man – were not injured. The 19-year-old man was later arrested at a home in Millewa Avenue in Wahroonga, and taken to Hornsby Police Station where he was charged with dangerous driving occasioning death – drive manner dangerous, negligent driving (occasioning death) and cause loss of foetus – death of pregnant woman.
