Heritage approval granted for Nagambie bridge restoration

Strathbogie Shire Council has received approval from Heritage Victoria for demolition and restoration works at Chinamans Bridge, Nagambie.

The decision follows a detailed permit application process coupled with extensive advocacy and ensures the conservation of key heritage elements while addressing the structural and safety concerns the Bridge currently poses, the Council said in a statement today.

The approved works will involve the full demolition of the existing timber bridge structure, removal of associated infrastructure, and the restoration of land-based abutments of the bridge. In addition, efforts will be made to rehabilitate the surrounding riverbank and implement an interpretation strategy to commemorate the historical significance of the structure, the Council says.

The permit, issued under the Heritage Act 2017, includes a range of conditions to safeguard heritage values throughout the project.

These conditions require:

  • The engagement of qualified heritage and structural consultants;
  • Comprehensive archival documentation, including photographic surveys and LiDAR scanning;
  • A detailed Heritage Interpretation Strategy to inform and educate the community about the bridge’s history and significance;
  • Strict oversight by Heritage Victoria, including staged approvals and reporting requirements.

Mayor, Claire Ewart-Kennedy welcomed the permit approval, stating, “While the decision to remove the bridge was not taken lightly, this project ensures that its heritage value is preserved through interpretation and conservation efforts. We are committed to honouring the bridge’s historical significance while ensuring the safety and sustainability of the area.

“Council remains committed to achieving the best possible outcome for our community. We will continue to advocate to State and Federal governments for the balance of funds to complete the demolition.

“Chinamans Bridge is an important part of our local history, and through careful planning, we can continue to share its story with future generations. Council is dedicated to working closely with the community to deliver an outcome that respects our past while looking ahead to the future.”

All works are set to be carried out in line with Heritage Victoria’s conditions, with an expected completion timeline of up to four years.
