Griffith rail crossing safety in the spotlight after tragic loss

The tragic loss of 21-year-old Ethan Griffiths in a collision with a train at a level crossing in Yenda last year ignited an urgent conversation about rail crossing safety in the Griffith region.

Six months on from Ethan’s death, his mother, Jaime, has joined with Griffith City Council to call on the community and Government agencies to ensure no other family endures the same heartbreak.

The Council has launched a community-wide awareness campaign aimed at educating residents on the importance of rail safety. The campaign highlights Griffith’s status as a major food-producing hub, with frequent freight train and heavy vehicle traffic, reinforcing the need for vigilance at railway crossings.

Mayor, Doug Curran (pictured with Jaime Griffiths) emphasised the importance of addressing this critical safety issue.

“Ethan’s tragic passing has been a heartbreaking reminder of the risks associated with level crossings. As a community, we must work together to push for improvements that could save lives,” he said.

“Griffith City Council stands with Jaime in her efforts to ensure no other family experiences such devastating loss.

“I encourage everyone to take the extra few seconds at railway crossing. Those extra seconds could mean the difference between arriving to your destination safely or the result of another tragedy occurring on our roads.”

The campaign shares key safety messages, reminding road users that:

  • Trains can’t stop quickly – a loaded freight train can take up to 2km to come to a complete stop;
  • Look twice, think twice – whether driving, cycling, or walking, always stop, look, and listen before crossing;
  • Don’t rush, stay safe – being late is better than taking a risk at a crossing;
  • Slow down, look and listen – use all your senses to stay alert at railway crossings.
