Greater Dandenong Mayor saddened by latest road fatality

Greater Dandenong City Council Mayor, Lana Formoso says the Council was “extremely saddened” to hear news of a pedestrian fatality on a dangerous local road on Friday night.

“Our thoughts and sincere condolences are with the family and all those affected by this terrible loss,” she said.

“Losing someone in these circumstances always has a profound impact on our community.”

Victoria Police launched a public appeal for information following the death of the pedestrian, a 29-year-old Dandenong North woman, who was struck by two cars while crossing Stud Road at approximately 7pm on Friday.

Police say the first driver involved in the incident stopped and spoke with officers at the scene, while the second in a dark-coloured SUV allegedly fled the scene.

A 21-year-old man handed himself in to Cranbourne police station in the early hours of Sunday.

“Council is very concerned by the number of road fatalities in Greater Dandenong and across the southeast,” said Mayor Formoso.

“We note that Victoria Police has launched Operation Regal this weekend, in a bid to reduce road trauma. We urge all road users to take the utmost care this weekend, especially with reduced daylight and wintry conditions.”

The Council has been advocating for pedestrian facilities and traffic lights on Stud Road. Friday night’s accident occurred on a different section of the same road.

“Council welcomed the recent budget commitment from the State Government to install traffic lights and pedestrian facilities at the Stud Road and McFees Road intersection,” said the Mayor.

“We commit any practical support we can offer to the Department of Transport and Planning, to have that project completed as soon as possible.”
