Glenorchy council joins with Woolworths to fire up community BBQs

Glenorchy City Council and Woolworths are launching a new partnership that will see the supermarket support a free monthly community BBQ program across the local government area in a bid to help create more opportunities for residents to connect, share a meal and strengthen neighbourhood ties.

The first BBQ under the new partnership will take place at the Goodwood Family Fun Day today, marking the beginning of a long‐term commitment to fostering community connection through regular, accessible events.

Acting Mayor, Russel Yaxley said the partnership reflects Council’s focus on building strong, inclusive and welcoming communities.

“Sharing food is one of the simplest ways to bring people together. This partnership with Woolworths allows us to create more regular opportunities for residents to connect in relaxed, friendly settings,” said Mayor Yaxley.

“Launching the program at the Goodwood Family Fun Day is a great way to start something that will benefit our community all year round.”

Woolworths Operations Manager Vic/Tas, Nannette Rose, said the company is proud to support initiatives that strengthen local communities.

“Supporting the communities we serve is incredibly important to us. We’re delighted to partner with Glenorchy City Council to provide monthly community BBQs that help create welcoming spaces where families, neighbours and friends can come together,” said Ms Rose.

The Goodwood Family Fun Day will feature the first of these free community BBQs, along with a range of activities including free biochar and native plants from Council’s Landcare and Sustainability team, coffee from Van Demon’s Café, basketball activities, mini games, children’s entertainment, a paper plane competition, and health and wellbeing engagement with Karadi – Deadly Choices.

Goodwood Neighbourhood House will also be part of the day, connecting with local families and residents. The event is free to attend and open to everyone, with all activities designed to be inclusive and accessible for people of all ages.

Future BBQs will advertised on Council’s website (www.gcc.tas.gov.au) and Facebook page.
