Glen Eira Mayor, Simone Zmood, says she has been left “appalled and heartbroken” by a fire bombing attack on an East Melbourne synagogue and protests at an Israeli-owned restaurant in the Melbourne CBD on Friday night.
The Mayor extended the Council’s heartfelt thoughts to the members of the East Melbourne Synagogue community and patrons of Miznon Restaurant.
“The trauma and horror of these attacks — especially during Shabbat — is unimaginable. Please know that Glen Eira stands with you and we share in your sorrow,” said Mayor Zmood.
“To our Jewish community in Glen Eira: we see you, we support you, and we will continue to stand with you.
“To all Glen Eira residents: now more than ever, let’s come together, support each other, speak out against hate, and reaffirm the values of respect, inclusion and unity that make our city strong.”
Victorian Premier, Jacinta Allan, today announced she will convene a new Anti-Hate Taskforce between Governments and Victoria Police.
The Premier confirmed the taskforce will meet for the first time this week.
“I will be updated on how Victoria Police plans to operationalise the criminal components of the Anti-Vilification and Social Cohesion Act; progress and updates from the LEAH meetings occurring within the Jewish Community; and the progress of community consultation and development of legislation for increased police powers to stamp out extreme and violent protest.”
“I will also invite representatives of Melbourne’s Jewish Community to participate in this meeting, so their voice is heard from the outset.”
The Premier said the taskforce will meet regularly and consist initially of representatives of Government including the Minister for Police, Victoria Police and the Lord Mayor of Melbourne – with membership to expand over time.
“Hate doesn’t belong in Victoria. It has no place outside synagogues or inside restaurants,” said Ms Allan.
“We have a strong action plan and we’re implementing it piece by piece.
“We back our police, we’re giving them more powers – and we won’t rest until every Victorian feels safe to be who they are.”
The Premier also thanked Victoria Police for their swift work to apprehend and charge the alleged perpetrator of Friday night’s attack.
Police allege 34-year-old Angelo Loras, entered the grounds of the East Melbourne Jewish Congregation on Albert Street at 8pm on Friday.
He then allegedly poured flammable liquid on the front door of the religious building and set it alight before fleeing.
“I visited the synagogue today to meet its Rabbi and Shule President. We spoke about how the congregation is feeling following this anti-Semitic attack.”
“I pledged to Rabbi Gutnick that our Government will provide funding for mental health support to the congregation – particularly for the children who were inside the building when the fire was lit,” she said.
