Georges River Council has received international recognition for its climate action, achieving a Cities B score in the 2025 Carbon Disclosure Project – Local Governments for Sustainability (CDP-ICLEI).
Mayor Elise, Borg said achieving a B score in the CDP Cities program was an important recognition of Council’s commitment to climate action.
“It reflects the steps we have taken to reduce emissions and support a more sustainable city,” she said.
“Council remains dedicated to continuing this work and creating a cleaner, greener Georges River.”
The Council earned a CDP Cities B score for its mitigation efforts across both Council operations and the wider community.
Council has taken several steps to create a more sustainable city, including:
- In July 2022, Council achieved its target to source 100% renewable energy for its operations three years early;
- In November 2023, Council banned gas and gas-powered infrastructure in all new Council-built, owned, or managed facilities. Exceptions are allowed only where no suitable alternative exists, and a business case supports it;
- In the 2024–25 financial year, energy use from street lighting dropped by 44%. This change followed the rollout of an accelerated LED streetlight replacement program;
- In November 2025, Council extended its Net Zero Carbon target, committing to Net Zero Carbon by 2036 with review in 2030. The change promotes focus on future mitigation and decarbonisation projects for its own operations.
These actions help create a cleaner and more liveable city. They support better-maintained public spaces and help the community prepare for hot weather and other extreme climate events, the Mayor said.
Georges River residents are also encouraged to reduce their environmental footprint through Council-run initiatives. Examples include:
- Home Energy Efficiency Kits available at Georges River Council libraries.
- Tree Giveaway events.
- Quarterly E-Waste Drop Off events and Household Chemical Cleanout events. In the 2024–25 financial year, 102,629 kg of e-waste and 47,420 kg of hazardous waste were safely collected through Council events.
