Councils are now able to apply for funding for new and upgraded heavy vehicle rest areas under the Australian Government’s Heavy Vehicle Rest Areas (HVRA) initiative.
Through the HVRA, the Australian Government has committed $140 million over 10 years for the construction of new and upgraded heavy vehicle rest areas.
The HVRA initiative provides funding for rest area projects that improve the productivity and safety outcomes of heavy vehicle operations across Australia. This can include construction of new rest areas, expansion of existing rest areas, upgrading of informal rest areas, and projects which improve signage for formal and informal rest areas.
Applications are accepted all year round for assessment three times a year. The next assessments will commence on 1 October 2024.
Applications must meet requirements under Safer Local Roads and Infrastructure Program (SLRIP), address the HVRA focus area, and an additional HVRA-specific criterion as outlined in the guidelines. The application form is available at Infrastructure Investment Program website.
