Hume City Council has joined forces with Football Australia, Football Victoria and Cricket Victoria to advocate for a $6 million state contribution towards the Ellscott Boulevard Recreation Reserve Development, a major community infrastructure project that will support Mickleham’s fast-growing population.
The proposed 9.5-hectare reserve will deliver sporting fields, a pavilion, change rooms, community spaces, sports lighting, a playspace, pathways, public amenities and supporting infrastructure.
“Mickleham is one of Victoria’s fastest-growing communities and it is critical that investment in community infrastructure keeps pace with that growth,” said Mayor, Carly Moore.
“The Ellscott Boulevard Recreation Reserve Development will deliver vital sporting and recreation facilities for local families, creating a vibrant community hub where people can connect, participate and lead healthy, active lives.”
“Hume City Council is delivering this $20 million project because we understand that high- quality sport and recreation infrastructure is fundamental to building healthy, connected and thriving communities.
“Together with Football Australia, Football Victoria and Cricket Victoria, we are advocating for a $6 million government contribution to help deliver the facilities our growing community needs.”
The Council says the $20 million development will create opportunities for people of all ages and backgrounds to participate in sport and recreation, while supporting community wellbeing, social connection and active lifestyles.
Football Australia, Football Victoria and Cricket Victoria are supporting Council’s advocacy efforts.
“Football Australia is proud to stand alongside Football Victoria and Hume City Council to support this proposed sporting precinct,” said Football Australia CEO, Martin Kugeler.
“The Socceroos and Matildas continue to inspire the nation, driving booming participation with nearly two million Australians playing football. However, this growth means demand is exceeding supply across the country, including Victoria.
“Currently there are areas in Australia and Victoria where young players are being turned away because we simply lack the facilities to accommodate them.
“Quality facilities like this are vital to connect communities and ensure our next generation can begin their football journey.”
Cricket Victoria General Manager Government Relations and Strategic Partnerships, Dylan Prescott said the organisation was proud to join advocacy efforts for the new facility.
“Cricket in Mickleham is continuing to grow and project such as Ellscott Boulevard Recreation Reserve Development are vital in meeting this demand,” said Mr Prescott.
Football Victoria CEO, Dan Birrell said football was growing rapidly across Melbourne’s north.
“Mickleham is a great example of why we need to make sure investment in sporting infrastructure keeps pace with population growth,” said Mr Birrell.
“Projects like Ellscott Boulevard are about creating the capacity for football to grow, and having quality fields, lighting and supporting facilities in one location makes a real difference. It means our football community can accommodate more teams, with more players, and with more families having a proper place to participate in the game and connect close to home.
“Council has already made a significant commitment to this project, and we’re proud to stand alongside Hume City Council, Football Australia and Cricket Victoria to call for the remaining government investment needed to deliver for the community.”
